Full-Spectrum Product Authentication: Combining QR codes and Natural DNA tagging to fight food fraud

In a world where global supply chains are becoming increasingly complex, a bitter reality has emerged: food fraud is a multi-billion dollar industry. From adulterated honey and mislabeled seafood to high-end spirits refilled with cheap substitutes, the "shadow economy" of counterfeit food doesn't just hurt a brand's bottom line - it poses a genuine risk to public health and consumer safety.

At TrackVision AI, we’ve spent years perfecting the digital layer of the supply chain. But as counterfeiters get smarter, the industry needs a defense that goes deeper than the surface. Today, we’re sharing a vision of how the digital world meets the biological world to create unbreakable proof of authenticity and provenance.

The Digital Front Line: Serialization and the "Second Factor"

The industry standard for fighting fraud has long been the unique QR code, ideally utilizing the GS1 Digital Link standards. By giving every single package a unique digital identity, brands can track a product from the factory floor to the consumer’s hand.

TrackVision AI excels here by processing "crowd-sourced" data. Every time a consumer scans a code to check authenticity or unlock a loyalty reward, our system analyzes the "heartbeat" of that product. If a single code is suddenly being scanned in three different cities at once, we can pinpoint the suspicious duplication and alert brand enforcement teams immediately.

To make this even tougher to fake, we often integrate "second-factor" authentication with specialized partners:

  • Laava: Adds unique, forensic-level variations in print patterns (Smart Fingerprints®) that are nearly impossible to photocopy.
  • Veracity Protocol: Uses AI-powered "industrial vision" to capture a “digital fingerprint” of the packaging at the moment of manufacture, enabling the validation of the physical material later through smartphone photos.

The Missing Link: When the Package is Real, but the Food is Fake

While digital serialization is incredibly powerful, it faces a persistent challenge: The Substitution Attack.

Imagine a high-end olive oil bottle. The QR code is genuine, the "second factor" print pattern is perfect, and the packaging is authentic. However, a bad actor has siphoned out the liquid gold and refilled it with cheap seed oil. To a digital scanner, that bottle looks authentic because we are authenticating the packaging, not the product inside.

Enter Natural Trace: The "Inside Man"

This is where our partner, Natural Trace, changes the game. They offer a revolutionary way to track the actual food product using a Natural DNA-based food ingredient, called NaturalTagTM

  • 100% Natural & Food-Grade: It’s non-GMO and completely safe for consumption.
  • Invisible & Tasteless: It is added directly to the batch during production.
  • Tamper-Proof: Unlike a label, you cannot peel off a DNA tag or "refill" it. The tag is the product.

While in-product tagging provides the ultimate forensic proof, it does have a practical hurdle: you can’t (yet) sequence DNA with a smartphone at a grocery store. It requires sampling and machine testing. This means it works best when we have a digital "trigger" to focus investigation efforts. Additionally, if a more “distributed” sampling regime is desired, where not just the manufacturer but also distributors, retailers and government agencies could initiate tests, a way to quickly tell whether a specific product is tagged is vital.

 The Vision: “Full Spectrum” Authentication

By combining TrackVision AI’s digital infrastructure with Natural Trace’s biological tagging, we create the most robust anti-counterfeit solution on the market. Here is how it works:

  1. The Digital Twin: Every package is assigned a unique, randomized identity by TrackVision, embedded in a QR code following the open GS1 Digital Link standard.
  2. Integrated Traceability: In the TrackVision system, we record the "Birth Certificate" of the product - manufacturing date, expiry, and the lot numbers of all input ingredients.
  3. The NaturalTagTM Key: One of those recorded ingredients is the unique signature of NaturalTag™ from Natural Trace. The NaturalTagTM lot number serves as the "public key," while only Natural Trace knows the specific DNA signature it maps to.
  4. Real-Time Monitoring: As the product moves, consumers scan the QR code for loyalty points or origin information. TrackVision monitors these scans for anomalies (like "impossible travel" due to code duplication, or unrecognized codes that weren’t activated in authorized factories).
  5. Targeted Forensic Verification: If TrackVision detects a suspicious fraud pattern in a specific region, the brand doesn't have to guess. They can pull a sample from that specific location and initiate a Natural Trace NaturalDetectTM PCR test.
  6. The Final Proof: Because the QR code is linked to the NaturalTagTM lot number in our system, the QR code can notify the user (typically a distributor or retailer) that a NaturalDetectTM Test is an option available for this product, and provide instructions on how to organize the test. Once the sample reaches the lab, they know exactly which NaturalTagTM signature to look for thanks to the product’s digital record - meaning the testing process is faster and more scalable. If the NaturalTagTM signature doesn't match - or isn't there - you have undeniable proof of fraud.
  7.  Analytics at Scale: The brand can utilize extensive AI and analytics inside the TrackVision AI and NaturalCloudTM software platform to analyse all product verification activity (both digital and physical) and associated results across all regions, looking for problematic regions and trends and enabling better targeting of limited enforcement assets.
